How Roblox and SuperOne hand the power of innovation to the people
There’s an old adage that says that if you want something done properly, do it yourself. So, in the online gaming sphere, that’s essentially what Roblox offers you to do.
Roblox is an online game platform and game creation system that allows users to program games and play games created by other users. Released in 2006, it’s totally free to play but offers the chance for in-game purchases with a virtual currency called “Robux”.
As of July 2020, Roblox had over 150 million monthly active users, with an estimated 1.5 million in the UK alone. But what’s the hook? Easy — its success is that it’s not just one game but rather a collection of more than 50 million games created by the Roblox community of players.
It taps into the “user-generated content” phenomenon that has made YouTube or Twitch other platforms popular. Developers have finally recognized that a generation of young entrepreneurs who have grown up on electronic devices is a worthwhile market to explore. But game developers tend to be behind the curve.
SuperOne is not.
There’ll never be any shortage of content on Roblox. Roblox Studio Software reports that there are about 2 million users regularly creating games, which are then released on the platform and played by up to 100,000 people almost immediately. Neither is there any shortage of content on SuperOne.
Just like Roblox and Minecraft, the blockchain-managed gaming platform and marketing wunderkind use player content to develop the games for its fanatical global fanbase uses every day.
Making a hobby a profession
For those many children who design games for Roblox, this goes beyond ‘casual play’.
This is a hobby — a passion for them. Roblox sensed the talent out there amongst the young designers and made it possible for them to start making money for doing something they love. The result? Roblox paid out more than $100 million in 2019 to game designers who have formed businesses and made creating content their profession.
Young entrepreneurs have now made the seamless progression from amateur designing in their bedrooms after school to setting up their own companies and earning high annual salaries as established designers, all while never really feeling as though they’ve gone and got a job. After all, they’re still doing just what they love.
SuperOne does this, but much more overtly. Its affiliate partners are either already entrepreneurs in their own right, or people around the world new to the idea of making money from home — particularly now Covid working practices are the new normal. An escapist outlet for people It’s worth mentioning another factor in Roblox and SuperOne’s success.
Stepping away from the figure sheets and the dollar potential, these platforms have rocketed because it gives millennials exactly what they need: low-pressure escapism. Many of the games focus on “unstructured play” which is just a 21st century equivalent of kids in the ’80s and ’90s hanging out behind the school playing fields on BMXs.
There’s little or no competition, the object often isn’t to win, you can’t get gunned down by rival players or wasted by zombies and the frenetic pace of modern life is temporarily placed to one side.
This is how millennials find relaxation nowadays and with Roblox and SuperOne designed and developed around mental wellbeing and offering ways to make money, they are here to stay.
